What is Open Door?

Open Door is a drop-in centre in the heart of Colchester. We are open for any and every one who might need a little bit of extra support. Our drop-in sessions are very informal and have a café style. One of the team will be on hand if you would like to talk to someone or you can just sit quietly and read a newspaper.

Opening times

We are open from 10am to 2pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

We are closed on bank holidays.

What we offer

  • A warm welcome to everyone in a relaxed café style setting
  • Friendship and a listening ear
  • Value-for-money food and drink (for example a cup of tea is just 10p!)
  • Crisis support
  • Advice on a wide range of issues (including welfare and housing)
  • Sign-posting and referrals to other agencies
  • Also look out for activities such as singing, gardening, colouring, and chair exercises!

Sunday@One & Tuesday@Twelve

We have an informal Sunday service at 1pm in the church hall. Everyone is welcome to join us as we worship God, listen to a talk, hear testimonies and enjoy a free hot lunch together.

Every Tuesday we have a Bible study at 12pm in the church lounge which is an opportunity to find out more about the Bible together, also with a free lunch afterwards.

Please contact us for more information.

All of our volunteers are active members of various Christian communities throughout Colchester and surrounding areas. They all have to have a DBS certificate and they receive on-going supervision and training.

Since our opening in 1986, we have befriended many people and journeyed with them through the highs and lows of their lives without judgement or prejudice.

In 1991 the church lounge was built and we have been there ever since. Over the summer of 2017 this room underwent a refurbishment so we now have a fresh and bright new space to offer.

It wasn’t until 2012 that our Sunday@One and Tuesday@Twelve meetings started and we have seen many people come along and be part of these communities.

At the beginning of 2017 we celebrated 30 years of Open Door and reflected on all the lives that have been affected by this ministry over the years. Much has changed over the last 30 years but we still offer the same warm welcome and listening ear to anyone who comes through our Open Door!
